This is an antique Log Cabin / Barn Raising quilt, dating to circa 1900. There are 42 9.5" blocks, with a 1.5" border (binding), and the size is 64x74. This quilt was one of several antique quilts donated to a nonprofit group I'm part of. If this one sells, there will be more. Please look at the pictures and ask questions - I will try to get you answers. It came to us packed in acid-free tissue paper and box. According to the appraisal, the quilt top is wool, and the gray fabric looks like a beautiful wool suiting.
But the navy blue fabric almost looks like raw silk, IMO. I took some close-ups of it, please judge for yourself. This is a summer quilt - there is no batting in it, nor is there quilting. It is tied at the block corners and to the back. The edging is a deep green, which has faded on the front side to a deep sage-type green. It was machine applied and hand secured.
This quilt was appraised in April of 2011 and was part of a large collection. The appraiser commented that the construction is "Excellent, " with secure stitches.
" The condition was noted as "Excellent, No holes, no stains, " (I photographed one light mark on the quilt front) and that the "Ties go through to back instead of front. " They ended with "Common design, but not traditionally pieced. All in all, this is a beautiful two-color antique quilt, and would be a lovely addition to a collection.
