This is a crisp and pristine log cabin top circa 1880. It is ready to frame as modern art.It measures 93L X 68. I always thought to frame it into a nearly perfect square.
Easily done if you loose a few rows. I like it 68" X71" framed. I have one in my home framed and it really looks like modern art. I get so many compliments.I owned a shop in Manhattan called "The Patchworks", in the 70's. The log Cabin was my favorite Pattern. This top features fabrics from the 1880's and it's wonderful with all the red. I've kept it all these years lovingly stored in a hope chest. "Log Cabin - Barn Raising" variation pieced quilt. Pennsylvania Mennonite, third quarter of the 19th century. "Log Cabin" quilts are a Classic favorite of collectors and quilt aficionados, as well as quilt makers of every era. This "Barn Raising" variation shows an overall bird's-eye view of the four sides of a barn structure about to be raised, an event that often was a good excuse for a rural community to celebrate with a party. Each block is constructed of "logs" or strips, in this quilt, each log measures approximately 1inch wide or less in varying lengths.
The block is diagonally divided with darker colors on one side and lighter colors on the other, with a center square which is often red. Folklore tells us the red symbolizes the fire in the log cabin's fireplace. A wide variety of calico prints of the period are preserved in this textile.
