Absolutely remarkable antique Log Cabin / Streaks of Lightning quilt top made up of well over 6,000 small pieces of old cotton print fabric. The quilt top measures about 66 x 72" overall and is made up of 440 log cabin blocks that measure about 3 1/4" square and contain anywhere from14 to as many as 24 individual little slivers of fabric each.So the quilt top contains at least 6,160 pieces and probably closer to 7,000. Based on the style of fabric, I would guess this dates to the 1920's, perhaps earlier.
Each block has a dark side and a light side and they are arranged to create a "Streaks of Lightning" design in the overall quilt top. Blues and burgundies predominate in the dark streaks, and whites, pale blues and pinks predominate in the light streaks. Another interesting feature is that each log cabin block has a single piece of fabric underlying it. The stitches that piece together all the little slivers of fabric in the block also stitch down through the underlying piece, almost like an applique. This amazing quilt top would enhance any collection of antique quilts. The quilt top is in very good condition. I found a couple of small spots on one piece at the edge, and two places along the edge where the stitching between blocks has come loose for a couple of inches (see close-up pictures of these minor flaws).
