This is a small antique log cabin quilt. It is definitely quite antique in look and materials. This measures 58" square and is constructed in 7.5" squares, with four squares together in the main pattern. It is composed of strips of a fabric with a lustrous silky finish - either silk or polished cotton. The color palette is quite beautiful with muted creams, salmon, pink and a bit of taupe, all arranged in an artful way, as you can see in the photos. All around the edges there is a 4.5 ruffle of delicate lace in a dark cream color. At the corners the lace is gathered. This was meant as a quilt with some layers of lining; there is a backing of brown fabric that is disintegrating and has many rips, but it does allow a look inside - I have included a photo of the seam allowance of one of the squares, and it's bright pink! Either the selvedge was darker or the fabric has faded -? There is an inner layer of navy blue, perhaps padding.
The brown fabric covers about 3/4 of the back and the rest is finished with muslin, as shown. Please check the photos for details. The front is excellent and looks very good, but the back has those tears in the brown backing. The front, with its subtle color combinations, is lovely. This could be enjoyed as is as a hanging quilt, or repair the backing on it and use it for a bed cover. It is a beautiful antique. Please write in with any questions you may have.
