Log Cabin quilts are traditionally both pleasingly graphic and sophisticated in design. This quilt has a white cotton sleeve sewn across its width to accommodate a bar to hang the quilt as a wall hanging. This sleeve has the museum identification catalog number written on sleeve. Blocks measuring 6- 3/4 inches square contain approx. 1/4" to 7/16" wide logs.
Quilt measures 76" x 74-1/2". The condition is good, some shredding and deteriorating strips of material, no repairs, no stains, as found, there are several scattered bites in a few logs as well as small pin holes. The backing needs to be reattached to edge in places. The backing has begun to shred in few places. The damaged logs would be a easy fix.
I have not washed this quilt, in as found condition. The quilt is totally hand pieced and hand stitched with fabrics from the 1860's. The backing has early patterns of printed calico. This quilt would make a great visual wall hanging.
